The European River Year
| Months | Demand | What it is like | Cost tendency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late March to mid-April | Building | Cool, fresh; first sailings; tulip season begins in Holland | Often lower, except tulip and Easter dates |
| Late April to May | High | Spring green, mild days; very popular | Usually higher |
| June | High | Long days, warm | Usually higher |
| July and August | Mixed | Hot in the south; possible low water; European holidays | Varies; worth comparing |
| September | Peak | Warm, harvest season, wine festivals | Usually highest |
| October | Falling | Autumn color, cooler, shorter days | Often easing late in the month |
| Early to mid-November | Low | Grey, cool, quiet towns; last regular sailings | Often lower |
| Late November to December | High | Christmas markets | Usually higher, especially mid-December |
| January to mid-March | Pause | Most European itineraries do not operate | — |
The “cost tendency” column describes demand, not a promise. Lines price each departure separately, and a quiet month can still have a sold-out ship. That is why the only reliable test is to compare the fare for the same cabin across several dates.
Why Spring and Late Autumn Cost Less
Two months stand out in advisor surveys. In the Travel Market Report River Cruise Outlook 2024, 62% of the 703 advisors surveyed named September and 56% named May as popular months for their river cruise clients. Those months combine mild weather, long days and a full program ashore, so they fill early and lines have little reason to discount them.
Move a few weeks to either side and the picture changes. In late March and early April, evenings are cool and some gardens are still bare. In late October and November, the days are short and the vineyards are finished. Fewer travelers choose those dates, and the lines that sail then often price them to fill the ship. You still get the same cabin, the same meals and the same towns — with fewer people in them.

Dates That Cost More Than You Expect
- Easter week. Holiday travel lifts demand; compare with the week before and after.
- Tulip time in Holland and Belgium. Keukenhof opens for only a few weeks each spring, and tulip-themed sailings are timed around it. Our sister site Holland River Cruising covers the season.
- Harvest and wine festivals. Late September on wine rivers such as the Rhine, Moselle and Douro is popular.
- Christmas markets. Mid-December departures are the most sought after; the first sailings of the market season can be better value.
Cheapest Month to Cruise: FAQs
What is the cheapest month to take a cruise on a European river?
There is no single month for every river and line, but the start of the season in spring and the end of the regular season in late October and November are typically quieter than May and September. Compare the same itinerary across those months.
Are July and August cheaper than May?
Sometimes, on some rivers. Summer brings heat and the risk of low water on some rivers, and some travelers avoid it. Others travel then because of school holidays. Check fares for both months on the itinerary you want.
Do river cruises run in January and February?
On most European rivers the regular season pauses after the Christmas markets and restarts in spring. A few lines run special winter sailings. Rivers such as the Nile and Mekong have their main season in the northern winter.
