Low Cost River Cruises: The Whole Trip

Quieter dates are step one. Here is how to keep everything else low cost.

Find Lower-Cost Sailing Dates
Home › Low-Cost Tips

Low cost river cruises start with the calendar, but the calendar is only half the story. Here is how to keep the whole trip low cost once you have found quieter dates.

Compare Dates Fairly

  • Use the same ship, the same itinerary direction and the same cabin category for every date you compare.
  • Check what each fare includes: drinks, tours, Wi-Fi, gratuities and transfers vary by line and offer.
  • Note any flight credit or air offer, and whether it applies from your home airport.
  • Ask whether a promotion applies only to certain departures, so you do not compare a promoted date with a non-promoted one.

A quick fairness test: if two dates differ in price, ask what else differs — cabin, direction, inclusions or promotion. Only then do you know whether the cheaper date is really cheaper.

Keep the Rest of the Trip Low Cost

Flights

Shoulder-season flights to Europe can cost less too. Flying a day early protects you from delays.

Hotels before and after

Embarkation cities are cheaper to stay in outside peak weeks.

Tours

Many river fares include a guided walk in most ports; add optional tours only where they matter to you.

Drinks and tips

Know what is included before you sail so the final bill holds no surprises.

Let Someone Else Do the Comparing

Comparing five dates across three lines is tedious work. That is exactly what our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise do every day. Tell us the river, the window and the kind of cabin you want, and we will lay out the options side by side, including any current promotions. Prefer to browse first? Small Choices That Add Up

  • Fly into the embarkation city a day early on a cheaper weekday flight rather than on the morning of sailing.
  • Use public transport for transfers where the line does not include them; many river ports are central.
  • Skip the drinks package if you drink little; on many river lines wine and beer with meals are already included.
  • Choose a cabin category for how you travel: if you are ashore all day, a lower deck may suit you fine.
  • Combine a shoulder-season date with a current promotion for the biggest difference.

None of these require a special deal; they simply keep a sensible fare from growing into an expensive trip.

Low-Cost River Cruise FAQs

What makes a river cruise low cost?

For timing, it is choosing dates with lower demand. For the whole trip, it also means counting flights, hotels, transfers, tips and drinks, because a cheaper fare with expensive extras is not a low-cost trip.

Is it cheaper to book flights separately?

Sometimes, and sometimes the line’s air offer is better. Compare both, and remember that separately booked flights may leave you on your own if a delay makes you miss the ship.
